Monica’s Story: From Uncertainty to Confidence Through Mentorship

by StreetWise Partners
October 1st, 2025

When Monica moved from Peru to Virginia in 2018, her goal was to build a better life for herself and her family back home. With a bachelor’s degree in international business from her home country, she worked as a nanny to make ends meet, but the pandemic brought both isolation and clarity. “I realized I needed to grow for myself and for my family,” she recalls.

Monica enrolled at community college, later transferring to Queens College in New York to pursue a degree in accounting. But despite her determination, she felt unsure of how to navigate the U.S. job market.

In Fall 2023, her career advisor told her about StreetWise Partners, and Monica joined the Bridge program in Winter 2024. At first, she was shy and hesitant, worried about her language skills and how she came across professionally. But with the support of her mentors, Angela and Makenzie, Monica learned to manage her time, practice interviews, and grow her confidence.

“My mentors really listened to me. They became part of my family,” she says.

With guidance from her mentors and the StreetWise community, Monica secured her first U.S. internship at Volunteers of America, and soon after, an audit internship at KPMG. “StreetWise gave me the tools and courage to speak up, ask questions, and believe in myself,” she remarks. In Fall 2026, she’ll begin a full-time role as an Audit Associate with KPMG.

“Mentorship helped me find my voice, clarified my path, and connected me with people who inspired me to move forward,” Monica reflects. ”

She dreams of one day founding a nonprofit to support immigrant communities with financial education and career opportunities. “I never imagined this would be possible without StreetWise.”
