Rodney Ladson, a Spring 2026 StreetWise Bridge graduate in Washington, D.C., received the Spirit of the Program Award in recognition of his outstanding commitment, enthusiasm, and growth throughout the 13-week program. From the very first session, Rodney stood out for his positive attitude and unwavering determination. His lead volunteer described his enthusiasm as "consistent, authentic, and honestly contagious," noting that Rodney not only approached each assignment with genuine care and thoughtful effort, but also brought a positive presence to the program that uplifted the experience for others.
In the Q&A below, Rodney reflects on his StreetWise experience, the lessons that shaped his professional journey, and the advice he hopes will inspire others pursuing their own career goals.
What was your professional life or job search like right before you found StreetWise Partners? What were the biggest challenges or frustrations you were facing?
Before finding StreetWise Partners, my job search had become discouraging. After losing my architecture career during the 2008 recession, I taught high school for several years before spending seven years in a retail job I hated. When I decided to pivot into software quality assurance, I trained as a manual software tester and started applying for jobs again, but I wasn't getting results. I attended webinars, joined a job club, and pushed myself to start networking because I kept hearing, "Don't search for a job alone." Even with those efforts, there were mornings when the thought of another day of job searching brought me to tears.

Tell us about your mentor. What made your connection with them unique or special? What was the best piece of advice they gave you? How did the broader StreetWise Partners community support your growth?
My mentor, Juanita, gave me something I had been missing for a long time: someone to share the job search with. She listened, encouraged me, and reminded me that I wasn't facing the process alone. One piece of advice she gave me that has stayed with me was to "get out of my own way." She also told me that the right opportunity would come, even if it wasn't my dream job at first, because it would help me get back to work. That encouragement helped me stay hopeful during a difficult time.
The support I received extended far beyond my mentor to other volunteers. My lead volunteer Nina's feedback on my deliverables gave me confidence that I was moving in the right direction. Marjorie, another mentor in my cohort, helped me rethink how I presented myself on my resume and in interviews. Lynn, a one-time volunteer at our mock interview event, conducted one of my mock interviews and encouraged me to embrace my architecture and teaching experience instead of minimizing it. StreetWise showed me that mentorship is not just about one person; it is a community of people who genuinely want to see you succeed, and that support gave me the confidence to keep moving forward.
Tell us about your current role, your organization, and what you love about it. Looking back, how did Streetwise Partners and your mentor directly help you land this role?
I am currently pursuing my first professional role in software quality assurance. Since completing StreetWise Partners Navigating the Bridge Program I feel much more confident in how I present myself, both on paper and in interviews. The program and my mentor helped me strengthen my resume, improve my interview skills, and discover that storytelling is one of my greatest strengths. I was also encouraged to embrace my entire career journey, including my architecture and teaching experience, as valuable parts of who I am rather than something to explain away.
What are your big professional dreams for the future?
Looking ahead, I hope to build a long-term career where I can combine my interests in software quality, accessibility, automation, and continuous learning. My goal is to contribute to teams that value collaboration, solve meaningful problems, and create technology that works well for everyone.
What is one piece of advice you would pass along to other job seekers?
I would tell them to network and not search for a job alone. It takes a community to stay encouraged, especially when the search feels difficult. Join a job club, attend webinars, and meet people who understand what you're going through. Some of the best opportunities come from conversations, not job boards. Most importantly, keep learning, keep showing up, and don't be afraid to ask for help. You never know which connection, conversation, or opportunity will change the direction of your career.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
One thing that made this experience especially meaningful was the encouragement I received from so many people. Every mentor, volunteer, and informational interview reinforced that my career path wasn't something to hide; it was something to embrace. StreetWise Partners helped me see that my experiences in architecture, teaching, and software testing all contribute to who I am today. I also learned that networking isn't about collecting contacts; it's about building genuine relationships. I leave the program with greater confidence, a stronger network, and a renewed sense of hope for what comes next.
