StreetWise Partners (SWP) will welcome Assistant Commissioner of Program Design and Development unit for the NYC’s Department of Small Business Services Workforce Development Division, Angie Kamath, as the commencement speaker at their young adult program graduation ceremony this Wednesday evening. Ms. Kamath will address 7 female graduates who have completed a rigorous 12-week job training and career coaching program. StreetWise Partners builds mentoring relationships between motivated low-income individuals and volunteer business professionals to develop workplace skills and employment networks as the bridge to a successful career.
Since 2003, when the Career Ventures program was launched (to serve young adults, ages 18 – 24) roughly 100 motivated job seekers have graduated from the intensive weekly training program. This year over a 120 volunteers are poised to serve 65 participants in SWP’s young adult programs. The training sessions – developed with help from volunteer HR professionals, career specialists, and experts on the young adult population – include computer skills instruction as well as soft skills trainings in goal setting, resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation, networking, workplace etiquette and public speaking.
Current SWP volunteer Mary Prabhaker explained, “My co-workers tend to say ‘Thank God it’s Friday’; being a part of StreetWise Partners my sense is more ‘Thank God it’s Wednesday!’. It is so clear what a dramatic impact volunteers and participants make upon each other every session. The SWP program increases confidence, know-how and networks for each of the young adults involved. I highly recommend the program for volunteers and potential clients alike!”
