Early Years

1997 22 Clients, 45 Volunteers.

StreetWise Partners originates as an innovative partnership - training low-income and unemployed individuals for the workforce by matching them with volunteer professionals.

Initial corporate supporters include PricewaterhouseCoopers (then Price Waterhouse LLP) and Morgan Stanley.

Incorporated in New York state and granted not-for-profit status under Section 501(c)3 of the IRS Code.

Client referral network established with nonprofits including NetWork at the Partnership for the Homeless and First Step at the Coalition for the Homeless.

1998 60 Clients, 80 Volunteers.

Computer donation program gives refurbished PCs to graduates.

1999 65 Clients, 115 Volunteers.

Robertson Stephens founds StreetWise Partners San Francisco, serving nearly 60 clients in three years.

2000 70 Clients, 115 Volunteers.

First major grant from the United Way of New York City paves the way for infrastructure development.

2001 75 Clients, 115 Volunteers.

Honored by Henry Street Settlement and Information For Families Inc. for dedication to helping others in NYC.

Coming of Age

2002 Full-time Executive Director hired.

SWP is profiled as a high impact New York nonprofit in www.nynonprofit.com

2003 100 Clients, 280 Volunteers.

Program expansion boosts us from 26 classes per year to more than 120.

Core programming expanded to young adults and underemployed individuals.

Cable News NY1 names Founder Matthew Gorin "New Yorker of the Week."

Profiled as a national best practice organization by Alliance for Nonprofit Governance.

500th client graduates.

Beneficiary of the "On Your Feet Project" supporting effective NY nonprofits.

Profiled as a best practice organization by Ford Foundation and Public Private Ventures.

2005 121 Clients, 500 Volunteers.

UPN 9 "Garden State Matters" profiles SWP participants.

Program Manager hired.

Profiled by ABC News.

Curriculum and services enhanced, including fuller networking, placement, retention support and alumni services.

Strategic partnerships with Casita Maria and Per Scholas.

HR Council founded with 20 employers represented.

First Career and Networking Fair.

Lehman Brothers three-month internship program launched.

Funded by the Ford Foundation, Public/Private Ventures published a report in which StreetWise Partners was recognized as one of only eight programs nationally that use a model of "employment networking" to build career pathways and self-sufficiency for low-income adults.

The New York Times profiled the SWP adult program and program graduate Stacy Abrego.

2006 153 Clients, 700 Volunteers.

JP Morgan Chase year-long internship program launched.

Two corporate volunteers, who had been mentors in New York, launched an adult mentoring program in Washington, DC based on the successful SWP model.

SWP expanded from two core programs to five distinct programs: 1) Adult Mentoring Program, 2) Young Adult Mentoring Program, 3) Alumni Program, 4) Per Scholas Mentoring and Training Program, and 5) Doe Fund Group Mentoring Program.
