Volunteer Activity Descriptions:
SPEED NETWORKING: Give our program participants the opportunity to meet new people, develop their confidence in speaking about their professional and personal experiences, and 'perfect their pitch' - the way they 'sell' themselves to new contacts they meet.
MOCK INTERVIEWS: Conduct 3 mock interviews as a CEO, Line Manager or HR Manager, and then provide direct feedback to our motivated, low-income job seekers.
RESUME REVIEW: Spend time reviewing different trainees' resumes before meeting with them and providing them with verbal feedback.
INDUSTRY DAY: Volunteers from different industries will be on-hand to advise program participants about careers in their industry. Volunteers talk about their career, their role, how to apply for jobs and how best to be successful in their field. Volunteers can either present on a panel, or talk one-on-one with program participants.
COMPUTER TEACHING ASSISTANT: Assist during computer instruction classes by moving around the room and ensuring trainees are following the instructor and answering any specific questions. Sometimes TAs will be assigned to a specific trainee to work with them throughout the workshop to enable them to keep up with the group. Computer instruction is given in basic Word, Excel and PowerPoint. (If you would like information on how to become a computer instructor, please contact Laura Maltz in NY or NJ -laura@streetwisepartners.org- or Lauren Libera in DC -lauren@streetwisepartners.org- thank you!).
INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWS: An exciting volunteer opportunity that doesn't even require you to leave your desk! Join StreetWise Partners' ‘Career Connect Database’. You will share basic information about your current job / career, and other industries you have worked in, as well as preferred contact information. The information you provide will be shared with StreetWise Partners trainees who may choose to reach out to you to schedule a short meeting, either by phone or in person, to gather information about career paths within your industry and learn about your professional background. All trainees who utilize Career Connect will be formally trained in properly arranging and conducting informational interviews. Depending on your industry and career background, as well as the interests of trainees, you may be contacted once or twice a year, or you may be approached more frequently- probably no more than six or seven times a year. (While we ask you to acknowledge all requests from trainees, you may always choose to turn down an informational interview request).
