Career Implementation

Following participation in our Career Ventures course, our program continues with the Career Implementation plan.

There are two elements to the Career Implementation plan:

  • 1. Trainees will have created a personalized Work-Plan with their mentors which sets out their near and medium term employment goals. For the following nine months, the same two mentors will continue to work with the trainee for flexibly-scheduled ongoing support tailored to help them overcome individual obstacles and achieve the goals of their Work-Plan.
  • 2. There will also be additional workshops taking place each month which trainees can attend with or without their mentors. These will focus on additional professional skills, such as leadership, networking and social media, emotional toll of job searching and financial literacy. These workshops will also expose you to more and more professional volunteers. If you have completed our Career Ventures program, you can click here to apply for these workshops.

Workshops include:

Job Searching: Volunteers spend time talking to participants about their current job search, and provide job search advice. Groups discuss transferable skills, and different industry options that might be applicable. If possible, participants and volunteers work on the internet together to review job postings and to apply for positions.

Networking & Social Media: Participants learn about how to make the most of networking situations, such as Career Fairs and networking clubs or events. Sessions also include a discussion about online social mediums for job searching and networking.

The Emotional Toll of Job Searching: Being unemployed can be extremely demoralizing. This workshop helps participants understand the emotional toll of job searching and ways that they can better cope with these strains and job application rejections. Activities focus on keeping a positive attitude, getting rid of the expectation of failure, understanding strengths, believing in yourself, and visualizing success.

Job Skills: This workshop is for StreetWise Partners alumni who already have a job, and are trying to ensure their success in the position. Activities are focused on successful communication, time management, how to impress your boss, decision making, and conflict resolution in the workplace.

Leadership Skills: Participants work with volunteers to talk about what leadership means, and how to develop these skills. Key factors include responsibility, motivation, managing upwards and downwards, and analyzing your own performance.

Creating a Winning Presentation! Volunteers work with participants to help them become better public speakers and presenters. After a series of warm-up activities, a presentation on public speaking and developing confidence, volunteers and participants work together to create a presentation for delivery to the group (if computer access is available, they may create a PowerPoint to support their presentations).
